Investment In Literacy

Literacy Begins At Home is a six-week reading program for parents, children, and teachers who wish to earn books for classroom libraries and home libraries. Books are expensive, and our program is an excellent way to provide books for these libraries. In addition to reading and listening to great stories, children will learn the importance of helping others.

Parents, teachers, and children should have a library card. With the abundance of books available in public libraries, we encourage its use n a weekly basis. We recommend the books from this website, however, they are not required reading for this program. Parents and teachers should be aware that our recommended books for the lower grades pertain to listening levels, which are usually one to two years above children's reading levels.

REQUIREMENTS

PARENTS – A minimum of 60 books is required for reading aloud. Reading duration should be an average of from thirty minutes to one hour daily for six weeks. A book log must be completed.

CHILDREN – Depending on grade level and reading ability, the pages listed below are required. A book log should be completed, as well as Acrostic Puzzle for only one book. An Acrostic Puzzle is a descriptive form of writing in which the first letter of each line spells out the title. Students may use part of their page requirement to read aloud to younger siblings.

4th grade: 700 pages
5th grade: 900 pages
6th grade: 1,200 pages
  7th grade: 1,500 pages
8th grade: 1,800 pages
9th - 12th grade: 2,000 pages

TEACHERS – For each grade level, teachers are expected to read-aloud a minimum of 30 minutes daily to their students over this six-week period. A book log must be completed.

PARTICIPATION

Sponsorship is required. We recommend enlisting support from family, friends, co-workers, etc. Completion of the Sponsor Form is necessary. Funds from sponsors are divided equally between classroom libraries and home libraries. See Sponsor Form for details.

Registration is also required. Please complete the Registration Form and return to The Children's Hour, along with the Sponsor Form and sponsor funds. Materials needed to participate will be sent upon receipt of these forms.

Upon completion of this program, return all materials to The Children's Hour for verification, no later than one month after completion of the six-week program. Gift certificates will then be awarded to parents, children, and teachers for the purchase of books for classroom libraries and home libraries.

As you look over our information, we hope you will consider participating in our program. Reading is at the heart of literacy, but in order to teach children the love of reading, books should be read to them at home as well as in the classroom, long past the time when they are able to read alone. Although schools and classrooms will benefit from your participation, ultimately your children and students will reap the rewards of your efforts.
