Deep in the Swamp, written by Donna M. Bateman, illus. by Brian Lies, (Charlesbridge Publishing, 2007), 32p, Ages 3-7.
Set in Florida's Okefenokee Swamp, this beautifully illustrated rhyming and counting book highlights ten animals in their natural habitat. "Deep in the swamp, where the neverwets grew,/Lived a mother snapping turtle and her little turtles Two./ 'Swim!' said the mother. 'We swim,' said the Two./So they swam through the prairies where the neverwets grew." Endpapers provide information on swamp flora and fauna and discuss each of the featured species-otters, turtles, flame birds, marsh rabbits, alligators, blue herons, damselflies, bullfrogs, rat snakes, and crayfish.

Hotel Deep: Light Verse From Dark Water, written/illus by Kurt Cyrus, (Harcourt Children's Books, 2005), 40p, Ages 5-10.
Twenty-one poems follow a sardine in search of its lost school in the great coral reef. Twenty-eight types of marine life are featured within the illustrations.

Over in the Ocean in a Coral Reef, written by Marianne Berkes, illus. by Jeanette Canyon, (Dawn Publications, 2004 HC, 2006 Board), 32p, Ages 3-7.
Illustrations from polymer clay feature sea creatures and their babies cavorting in and around a coral reef. Children will also have fun counting the ten different types of marine life. End pages give information on coral reefs, the various animals portrayed, and creative tips from the author and illustrator.

The Sea, the Storm, and the Mangrove Tangle, written/illus. by Lynne Cherry, (Farrar Straus Giroux, 2004), 40p, Ages 6+.
Mangroves begin in lagoons where a seed takes root and begins to grow, sending out roots to help it stand against storms. Over the years it becomes home to crabs, oysters, sea anemone, pelicans, and manatees. A unique look into an ecosystem that is endangered in many places around the world.

Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems,written by Joyce Sidman, illus. by Beckie Prange, (Houghton Mifflin & Co., 2005), 32p, Ages 5-9.
Teeming with life and surprises, the pond is a dramatic place. This collection of poems takes a closer look at the animals, insects, and plants that call these wetlands home, with accompanying information on each.
